If you love quilts as much as I do, you'll understand my feeling that all quilts deserve a good home, whether it be in a museum or in a home where their beauty and workmanship can be admired and appreciated. Even the quilt we find, tattered and no longer very attractive through use and hardship, was made by someone who was delighted when that last edging stitch was completed!
I classify my quilts as follows:
* those whose construction and condition still enable them to be used as bedcovers, whether daily or seasonally
* those quilts of a sufficient age, an unusual or complex pattern, and/or historical importance that they can be considered as collectors' quilts
* display quilts which can be vintage or antique, but whose condition is such that they should not take handling on a daily basis
CONDITION TERMS::
MINT - unused and unwashed
EXCELLENT - used with no fabric loss or fade
VERY GOOD - minimal use, stitching intact, minimal wear to edge finish
GOOD - signs of use, some wear, age spots
FAIR - fabric loss or damage, discoloration
good for crafts or reclaiming fabric for
repair or restoration projects
This antique wooden sewing box has a very unusual shape. The decoration on its top was created from FABRIC MACHIE. It is in FAIR condition but still usable. The wood frame was originally covered with the reddish brown silk velvet still intact on the heart shaped pincushion and tool holder. Now only the linen warp threads of the linen remain, except for the light colored spot above the broken latch where the wood shows through. The baby blue silk interior is dotted throughout with age spots. The original brass tacks dividing the 7 tool loops are present but the top was reattached at some point with new brass tacks. One interior side has a large silk loop while the opposite one has a smaller loop, probably for the thimble. It stands 4+1/2 inches high and is 8+1/2 inches across the widest section. The back part of the scallop or horseshoe is 7" wide. The two tools you see are not included - they have old repairs to the ivory from which they were carved. I have the broken part of the silver? latch but do not have the skill to repair metals!
